I have felt the absence since then, of something I could not quite define any longer.

The double is a reflection which does not adhere to the confines of any mirror, and so s/he may assume whatever form you find most pleasing. You walk together for a time on the path, in Dreaming or in memories half-remembered from a childhood that was and yet never was exactly as it is remembered.
This is the creation of the double and also the forming of the Self - the same and yet different, different and yet cut from the same cloth, the same mind, the same spirit. This is the conundrum of the double, the riddle and the answer, all as one which may at times perceive itself as separate , creator and created dreaming toward one another, yes?
What is the purpose? Simply this... by creating a portal to yourself outside of time, you create and begin to manifest the pathway to your own totality, the continuity of the I-Am beyond the limitations of the mortal body. The self creates the double and then, the double begins creating the Self. This is not something that may be easily understood from the position of the tonal, but is experienced energetically from the nagual self which exists outside of time altogether.
You already believe this. Now you have only to Know it.
